MARQUETTE TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WZMQ) – The State of Michigan and Michigan Veteran Homes (MVH) are pursuing a property in Marquette Township as the potential future location for the replacement for the D.J. Jacobetti Home for Veterans.
The plans are not final, as the State does not own the property, but the Michigan Veterans Facility Authority Board of Directors did express the desire to move forward with the new plan.
“Last week at the Michigan Veterans’ Facility Authority (MVFA) Board of Directors meeting, the board expressed its intent and desire to build the future Michigan Veteran Homes D.J. Jacobetti in Marquette Township,” said Ryan Engle in a statement, the Director of Development and Strategic Engagement for MVH. “While this is the intention, much remains to be accomplished in terms of site assessment and evaluation, property acquisition, and more, that could impact that intention.”
The current facility in the City of Marquette is operating in the building of the former St. Mary’s Hospital located on Fisher Street, and it currently is home to 105 veterans.
The State had originally planned to move forward with a new facility on Lakeshore Blvd. on the former Cliffs-Dow property last year. Those plans were stopped earlier this year when the city and MVH could not come to an agreement for the property. There are no renderings that have been released for what the new facility may look like at the site in Marquette Township, and former renderings were specific to the old plans at the Cliffs-Dow property.
“MVH remains excited to rebuild the Jacobetti with a $96M+ skilled nursing facility for veterans – a home that will serve veterans of the Upper Peninsula and broader region for years to come,” said Engle. “Additional information will be made available in coming weeks if and as things progress. Those interested in staying up to date on progress should visit www.michigan.gov/mvh and click on “Locations” and “The NEW Michigan Veteran Homes DJ Jacobetti” to stay up to date with the most current information.”
The exact location of the site has not been released at this time, and WZMQ will continue to update this story as more information becomes available.
