GLADSTONE, Mich. (WZMQ) – On Monday, Gladstone American Legion Post 71 hosted its annual Memorial Day ceremony at Fernwood Cemetery.
Legion members led a service in honor of all who have served in the military, bringing an American flag to half-staff for each one who gave their life. Legion members noted that the flag used was flown in Iraq, recognizing those who served in the Gulf Region. Servicemembers then performed a 21-gun salute, followed by the playing of “Taps.”
Although it rained steadily throughout the day, the weather did not keep community members from showing up to remember the sacrifices of local veterans.
“We’re very appreciative of all the people that came out despite the weather,” said Navy veteran George Maciejewski. “We often emphasize that during the wartime, in battles, there is no weather report. You just keep going, regardless of what the weather is. This is in honor and appreciation for those that have done that.”
American Legion members, Sons of the American Legion, and other volunteers placed hundreds of flags around the cemetery last week in preparation for the ceremony. Click here to see that story.
