Young creators inspired to share and develop writing skills at annual author conference

MARQUETTE, Mich. (WZMQ) – A group of 12 schools is getting the opportunity this week to learn from a published author, and work on literacy and creative skills. The Marquette Alger Young Authors Conference is an annual four-day event inviting schools to Northern Michigan University’s campus to think outside the box and teach the basics of writing books.

Each classroom in Jamrich Hall was filled with students sharing their writings and books, and the auditorium had special guest David Biedrzycki, published children’s author.

“When I was their age I just loved making my own stories that’s just something that I just really enjoy doing. The combination with the words and the artwork just enthralled me. I said oh wow look at this the story is actually being told with words and with pictures and I said this is what I wanna do,” commented Author David Biedrzycki.

Over almost 40 years, Young Authors has included over 13 schools and parents mention this annual opportunity gives kids a space to grow creatively in a profession that they might not otherwise be inspired by. “Right now in our classroom, our group is sharing papers, that they wrote throughout the year with each other and they’re just celebrating a year of accomplishments and a year of hard work,” commented Upper Michigan Homeschooler Rebecca Duke.
