LANSING, Mich. (WZMQ) – The Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) has opened applications for a new Shared Streets and Spaces Grant Program to fund quick-build projects that can make communities more walkable, bikeable, and transit-friendly.

The Shared Streets and Spaces Grant Program is a partnership with the Office of Future Mobility and Electrification.

Kevin Hohf, Transportation Services Section Manager with MDOT explained that the program is a $3.5 million, one-time item in MDOT 2024 fiscal year budget. He said each grantee can apply for up to $200,000, with no matching fund requirements.

“Eligibility of projects can be broad. This is a new program for us, so we really are focusing on including the elements from a few different types, focusing on transit, supportive infrastructure, pedestrian and bicycle supportive infrastructure.” Hohf said. “The main goal of the program is to really make communities more walkable, bikeable, and transit and micro-mobility friendly.”

The departments are looking for projects that would introduce or update bike and bus lanes, parking, shelters, or racks, as well as signage, and micro-mobility devices; or that will create community spaces to enhance user safety, and mobility, and support local place-making efforts.

Virtual Webinars were held to answer questions about the new program, which MDOT is planning to upload to its website along with questions submitted to its program email: MDOT-SSSG-Program@Michigan.gov

Shared Streets and Spaces has a focus on innovative and coordinated projects that are accessible, equitable, and easy to implement. Any incorporated city in Michigan, or public transit authority is eligible to apply for the fund. The applications have a deadline of June 7th, and MDOT is anticipating the funds will be awarded in August.
