MARQUETTE, Mich. (WZMQ) – Northern Michigan University is celebrating its wide variety of research opportunities for undergraduate and graduate students.

At Northern Michigan, undergraduate students have a chance to work with faculty on research, an opportunity that might not present itself until graduate student status. Thursday marked the 28th annual Celebration of Student Scholarships, expanding this area of study and opportunities to the community and student body.

“Faculty mentors at Northern are amazing for students and consequently the students engage in research that does make a difference in the world and especially in the Marquette community and UP region,” commented Dean of the College of Graduate Studies Dr. Lisa Eckert.

“This is more of a culmination, a celebration of all of those efforts because there are so many projects that are seedlings that get planted here,” commented the Director of Research Tesse Sayen.

This celebration is an event for undergraduates and graduates to show off their research while allowing students to collaborate and present new ideas to further research.

Yousef Qadumi is the Principal Investigator in his transcranial direct current stimulation research, which boils down to a new, non-invasive way of altering your brain function, to help with motor functions and exercising for the older population. “If you’ve had like a hip or knee replacement, you may be able to go into you’re PT session, get stimulated, and then rehab for a longer period, we’re trying to possibility delay that fatigue in the brain,” commented Principal Investigator Yousef Qadumi.

Students are spending hours in the field or clinical sites, developing data in studies like small mammal disease control and even studying species of otters to present at events like the celebration.

“These three species are all good indicators species of a healthy ecosystem, they have a low tolerance for polluted waters so if their not there that’s really bad,” commented Undergraduate Alexander Bowman.

If you’re at Northern looking for a research opportunity, the McNair Scholars, Freshman Fellows, and Research Fellows are all programs that undergratuate students can take advantage of, with one-on-one mentors.
