Insights: Marquette Senior Center representatives chosen to present at national conference, Capitol Hill

by Sarah Blakely

MARQUETTE, Mich. – The City of Marquette Senior Services Division has been selected to present at the 2024 National Council on Aging (NCOA) Conference, scheduled for May 6-8, 2024 in Arlington, Virginia. Senior Services Manager Maureen McFadden will present on the Senior Services’ Silver Sampler outdoor recreation and education program. McFadden will be accompanied by Silver Sampler program coordinator, Janet Koistenen.

The Silver Sampler program is an outdoor recreation and education program provided by the City of Marquette Senior Services Division which exposes participants 50+ to recreational adventures they might otherwise not try in Marquette County. The program seeks to eliminate the typical barriers associated with participation in recreational programs, such as fees and equipment, while providing expert instruction and guides to increase participants’ confidence and the capacity for people to recreate safely.

The NCOA Conference invites professionals in aging services fields from around the country to discover innovative programs, network, and get engaged with and inspired by recent trends and successes in older adult care, as well as advocate on Capitol Hill with Legislatures for current aging needs and services.

Ahead of their visit to Arlington in May, McFadden and Koistenen will share their presentation with the Marquette community on Wednesday, April 24 at 5:00pm in the Peter White Public Library Shiras Room. This presentation is free and open to the public. Registration is required and can be done by calling (906) 228-0456.

The Silver Sampler program is open to adults ages 50+ residing in Senior Services’ service areas of the City of Marquette and Marquette, Powell, and Chocolay Townships. For more information, contact the City of Marquette Senior Services Division at (906) 228-0456.
