Hiawathaland Farm Bureau hosts ‘Town to Farm’ event at Chenier’s Greenhouse

GLADSTONE, Mich. (WZMQ) – On Thursday, Delta County organizations came together to discuss local agriculture.

The Hiawathaland Farm Bureau hosted a Town to Farm event at Chenier’s Greenhouse in Gladstone.

“We encompass Delta, Alger, Marquette, and part of Schoolcraft, so we’re one of the larger Farm Bureaus,” said Hiawathaland Farm Bureau County President Dan Bahrman. “We have a lot of outreach, plus lobbying, social events, and all kinds of different things.”

Farmers had the opportunity to connect with area service agencies, discuss current legislation, and learn from their peers.

“We hope that we’ll get some relationships developed, both professionally and personally,” Bahrman said. “We don’t care what kind of farming you do—fisheries, forestry—they all can be members in our organization.”

Attendees also toured the greenhouse, which is in the middle of its planting season. Owner Nick Chenier and his wife Abbey say it was a great way to spark ideas for people’s gardens before the greenhouse opens to the public on April 26.

“Spring is coming,” said Abbey. “Everybody’s getting all geared up to talk about plants, grow plants, think about plants, grow plants, so this is definitely a good place to host this.”

“It’s definitely cool to bring people together to share ideas about agriculture and horticulture,” Nick said. “We’re excited to be able to have people from the community here at the greenhouse and give them a behind-the-scenes view of how we do things here during the growing season.”

The evening also included presentations on a variety of topics, including the history of farming in Delta County.
