MARQUETTE, Mich. (WZMQ) – Roadways could start seeing the wear and tear from the warm winter season, and officials said flood damage isn’t the highest on the worry list.
On a “normal” year of weather, Marquette Public Works knows the brief snow and rainstorms cause overnight freezing that can disrupt the roadway fixes.
This year, not only do the freeze-thaw cycles erode potholes, but, because there wasn’t as much snow; leaves, garbage, and other debris block storm drains and culverts that Marquette Public Works said just comes with some of the terrain they work around.
“It’s a lot of the same places if we can keep the water out of the roadbed itself and it’s going to last a lot longer but once the water gets underneath the asphalt, that’s where all the damage is occuring,” commented Public Works Director Scott Cambensy.
