NEGAUNEE, Mich. (WZMQ) – The Negaunee City Council has voted to delay rezoning 5 acres of ‘Old Town’ land.
At tonight’s council meeting it was unanimously decided to place the rezoning on the city’s next ballot election in August. Turning the land from public use to residential zoning caused controversy in the town.
A petition started by Jeff Plummer, a resident of Negaunee, received 193 signatures.
“In the petition process we figured at least 75% to 80% of the public did not like seeing green space that is highly used being turned over and sold for housing, we feel there are many other options for housing,” commented Plummer.
The council listened to the petition and Mayor Dave Kangas is pleased with the decision to move the decision to the August 6th Election.
“The people make the decision with the direction they want the city to go, so I am very glad it is going to go to a vote on August 6th,” remarked Kangas.
The city will host 4 listening sessions about the rezoning, the dates are yet to be announced.
