Wind chill and winter weather pet safety

by Mitchell Rife

MARQUETTE, Mich. (WZMQ) – The cold weather can be harmful, for dog breeds with multiple winter coats on. Marquette Veterinarians noted that even though most dog breeds carry coats that help with insolation, frostbite, and hypothermia are still very real dangers.

The temperature range an average dog can comfortably tolerate is 30 to 40-degree weather, and anything below should be carefully monitored. On top of that, the salt laid down on roadways and sidewalks can infect or damage a dog’s pads.

“The best advice if they were to have something like that is to get like some warm water and just wash and clean their paws out, just to work on just getting rid of anything like residue and irritants out of the way. If any more extreme irritations have you worried of course it’s good to talk to your local veterinarian about that too so they can asses it and go from there,” commented Marquette Veterinarian Dr. Edward Brauer III.

Dr. Brauer mentioned that any pet owners going outside during these colder months should keep an eye out for any raised paws, excessive panting, and licking of the paws.
