Ice safety tips from the U.S. Coast Guard

MARQUETTE, Mich. (WZMQ) – As temperatures drop, the U.S. Coast Guard would like to remind the public to be safe and careful when ice fishing and ice skating this winter.

It’s tempting to rush into frozen lakes and waterways to make up for lost time but just because it’s snowing does not mean ice is safe to travel on. According to the DNR’s website a minimum thickness of 4 inches is needed for Ice Fishing and other on foot activities. For ice skating

The U.S. Coast guard says being informed about conditions before setting out should be the first step for any ice related activity. Carrying proper safety equipment like a handheld radio and flotation device will also help you stay dry.

“Make sure you know what the weather is gonna look like, where you are going, how many people are going, let friends and family know where you are going and how long you are going to be gone, also make sure you wear the right clothes for the water temperature, not the air temperature, in case you go in, which we hope you don’t,” said Fireman Cheyenne Barsuto of the U.S. Coast Guard.

The Coast Guard and Emergency Responders train to perform ice rescues throughout the winter to ensure they are prepared to assist with emergencies.
