MARQETTE, Mich, (WZMQ) – mediaBrew Communications is sick of the lack of snowfall.
To get the flakes flying, it will play famous Yooper song “Heikki Lunta” every day on Sunny 101.9’s morning show.
Heikki Lunta is a song about a Yooper snow god, the name of which comes from translating the name of country artist Hank Snow into Finnish.
The local favorite was originally written and played on a radio station in Hancock in 1970 when they were worried about not having enough snow for a snowmobile race.
The song was so successful in bringing the snow that they had to write another song “Heikki Lunta Go Away,” later that year.
mediaBrew is hoping the song will have the same effect now as it did then.
Mark Evans, mediBrew’s Communications market manager, said the lack of snow doesn’t just impact our events, but the local economy as well.
“With the lack of snow it’s not only bad for events like the UP 200 and for the ski jumps, but also for business,” said Evans. “There’s a lot of mom-and-pop shops that really rely on the snowmobile traffic, rely on the skiing community, and this is killing them.”
mediaBrew plans to keep playing the song until we get a big snowfall. If it works well enough, they say we may even hear both songs.
