National Weather Service predicts low snow count for the season

NEGAUNEE TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WZMQ) – The end of 2023 saw record-breaking high temperatures and the first couple weeks of the new year is no different. The National Weather Service in Negaunee Township doesn’t predict any large snowfalls coming shortly. The lake temperature is a lot warmer than normal as well, hindering even more snowfall from sticking to the ground.

Even though they expected warm temperatures based on the El Nino pattern, meteorologists said the snow belt areas in the Keweenaw and near Calumet have the best chance of piling on snow. “Those areas already are 50-70 inches below their seasonal normal on snowfall at this point already so it is pretty phenomenal when you look at the lack of snow that we’ve seen so far and obviously the lack of snow cover on the ground at this point in the season,” commented National Weather Service Meteorologist Matt Zika.

Zika said that it’s too early to tell if the last half of the winter season will see significant snowfall, but the snow coverage for the season is still shockingly low.
