MARQUETTE, Mich. (WZMQ) – An annual event bringing culture and dance will be filling the Northern Center on Northern Michigan University’s campus. It’s a “Learn to Walk Together Pow wow“, hosted by NMU’s Native American Student Association and the Sault Tribe of Chippewa Indians.
Starting at 1 PM in the Northern Center Ballrooms on Saturday, they’ll have traditional native american dancing, jingle dancing, and a feast for the whole community to enjoy. This is the first pow-wow that will be held at NMU, and it’s aimed at sharing more of the Tribes’ culture with the community.
“You don’t have to be native to come here, anybody is welcome, the Pow Wow is a cultural event so we get to showcase who we are as a people and we want other people to see that because there’s a lot of understanding of that in the community,” commented Sault Tribe Elder Rosemary Larson.
This event will also have vendors from around the county and multiple drum circles with musicians from Wisconsin and the UP for the public to enjoy.
