HOUGHTON, Mich. (WZMQ) – UPDATE: 11/17/2023 3:01 p.m.: Houghton police have identified the shooting victim as 53-year-old Theron Duncan of Houghton.
Evan Dixon, 59, was arraigned in Houghton County Court Friday morning.
UPDATE: 11/16/2023 4:45 p.m.: According to the Michigan Attorney General’s Office, the suspect in the shooting that took place in Houghton on Monday evening is identified as 59-year-old Evan Dixon.
Dixon will appear in the 97th District Court on Friday, November 17, before Magistrate Nicole Jollimore for an arraignment. He is being charged with one count of first degree murder, and one count of felony firearm.
The Department of Attorney General is handling the case in the interim because of a vacancy in the position of elected county prosecutor. They told WZMQ that this is standard procedure throughout the state in the case of vacancies in that position.
An Assistant Attorney General will appear via Zoom for the arraignment.
The case will be handled by newly appointed Houghton County Prosecutor Dan Helmer upon his swearing in on December 4th.
UPDATE: 11/14/2023 2:22 p.m.:
The Houghton Police Department has confirmed a 53-year-old man was killed in Monday night’s shooting. The man was found in the men’s bathroom at a Houghton establishment.
A person of interest was taken into custody and lodged at the Houghton County Jail. No further information will be released pending arraignment in the 97th District Court.

ORIGINAL STORY 11/13/2023 11:55 p.m.:
A man is dead and a suspect is in custody after a shooting in downtown Houghton Monday evening.
Houghton Police Chief John Donnelly says it happened downtown around 7 p.m. but did not confirm the exact location. One unidentified man died of a gunshot wound, and a suspect is being questioned.
Donnelly says the public is not in any danger. There were no other injuries.
