NMU fellowship program offers up to 100% tuition for students focused on rural economic development

MARQUETTE, Mich. (WZMQ) – A scholarship-funded program at Northern Michigan University is bringing students more hands-on experience in business and economic development right here in the UP.

Through a partnership with Invest UP, the Rural Leadership Fellowship program will be starting next January, giving students an advisory committee to focus on building economic models, workforce talent, and continuing education opportunities that support community projects in the UP.

Some students could even be eligible for full tuition along with up to $15,000 to help with living expenses.

“For the communities, it’s really an opportunity to go after that initiative or that program that may make a big difference in your community. We’re really hoping that this is a creative program that will help students pursue careers in public service as well as economic development as well as community partners in the Upper Peninsula,” commented NMU Executive Director of Business Engagement and Economic Development David Nyberg.

Undergraduates are required to have a maximum of 16 credits per semester and 4 credits per semester for a directed study or internship. For graduate students, it is a maximum of 12 credits per semester and then a minimum of 3 credits for directed study. Applications for this upcoming winter semester will be closing on November 30.
