ESCANABA, Mich. (WZMQ) – An Escanaba business has launched a campaign to keep those in need warm as the weather cools down.
Mr. Bike and Ski is hosting a fall coat drive. Owners Adam and Heidi Haeusler are looking for donations of gently used, pre-washed coats of all sizes.
Their goal is to collect 400 coats by October 31. The coats will then be distributed to local nonprofits and schools.
“Those who need coats the most are those who are the most vulnerable, which are typically young children, disabled, or seniors,” said Heidi.
“We’ve seen a lot of people that have bikes as their main mode of transportation who don’t have the proper equipment to deal with the harsh winters and conditions up here,” Adam said.
Anyone who donates a coat will receive either a $25 voucher toward a new coat or a $10 voucher toward a new vest from Mr. Bike and Ski.
“We’re always looking for ways to make our store accessible,” Heidi said.
The Haeuslers say in addition to providing warmth for those who need it, the drive is a creative way to bring more people to Downtown Escanaba.
“What a great way to come in, give back to the community, and then see the sights!” said Heidi.
Coats can be dropped off Monday through Friday from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. and Saturday from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Mr. Bike and Ski is located at 1016 Ludington Street.
