GWINN, Mich. (WZMQ) – The Gwinn Seed Library, is holding their final event of the season.

The Seed Library, located in the Forsyth Township Public Library is hosting a seed saving workshop. The workshop held at the Seed Library, will be from 10:30 a.m. until 12 p.m. Saturday, August 26th.

This workshop helps the library refill on their seed inventory, and helps people learn about how to properly save their seeds. When saved, an inventory of strong growing seeds can be held at the library, all available and free for anyone in need of seeds to grow food and flowers.

“You can get hundreds of seeds from one tomato, hundreds from one zucchini,” said Steve Finley, the Seed-bearer at Gwinn Seed Library. “So why not save $5 on a seed pack and save your seeds.”

Instructors will be there to teach specific examples of saving seed types, and what different techniques are used for different plants. Feedback on how to store seeds properly will be given, so that seeds harvested can stay viable for up to 5 years.

The Seed Saving Workshop will be hosting guest speaker, Grace Aalto Rosenbaum, who will be teaching attendees about her experience within seed saving, and how seed saving can change the way things grow.

The event host encourage to bring lots of friends, lot’s of questions, and maybe a plant you want to save the seeds from, to hopefully help all attendants learn how to save some seeds, and why it can be important.

“So when we talk about saving seeds, it’s not so much about something that I want to save, but what would happen if all of a sudden that one thing that you wanted that you could save seeds for, no longer became available.” says Finley.

This event, the seed library, and two gardens have all been sponsored/ funded by the Gwinn Lions Club, and UP Lions Serve.
