Composting Grant gives Ishpeming an avenue to create healthy soil locally

ISHPEMING, Mich. (WZMQ) – Ishpeming’s agricultural organization, Partridge Creek Compost is hitting the ground running after partnering with the City of Ishpeming. Partridge Creek Compost recieved $300,000 in research grant dollars from the USDA to expand it’s existing composting program.

It’s allowing the Partridge Creek Compost to expand this year from its current land space of 0.5 acres to 1.75 acres, with the means to reach 3 acres next year. Partridge Creek Compost initially will use this to help divert solid waste from businesses in Marquette County, creating more healthy soils that are available locally.

“When food goes into the landfill it doesn’t compost it biodegrades anaerobically which takes tens to hundreds of years for organc matter to break down so when we compost it and we introduce oxygen and balance our wet heavy food waste with things like woodchips and cardboard it turns into a really nutrient soil amendment,” commented Partridge Creek Compost Business Dir. Phil Carter.

Eventually, curbside pickup of compost materials will be rolled out to residents in the City of Ishpeming.
