MACKINAC COUNTY, Mich. (WZMQ) – One man is dead after a vehicle injury crash on US-2.
On Wednesday, July 5th, 2023 at around 2:35 PM, Mackinac County Sheriff’s Deputies responded to a report of a vehicle injury crash in Newton Township.
Law enforcement reported that the 71-year-old was driving a pickup truck with a camper that crossed over the E/B lane and left the roadway; striking several trees in the south side ditch of US-2.
Upon arrival, deputies observed that the occupant was unresponsive. Deputies along with Newton Fire Department, Portage EMS, and Michigan State Police removed the driver from the vehicle and began attempts to revive him but they were unsuccessful.
Law enforcement investigation indicates that alcohol and speed were not factors in this incident but investigators believe the 71-year-old driver may have suffered a medical incident that led to the accident.
The crash is still under investigation by Mackinac County Sheriff’s Office and MSP Accident Investigators.
UPDATE on June 5th, at 9:30 PM – This scene has been cleared by emergency units. All traffic flow has returned to normal.
