Air quality from wildfires is expected to see relief

NEGAUNEE TOWNSHIP, Mich (WZMQ) – The smoky smell and haze in the air are steadily moving away from the Great Lakes. According to the Air quality index (pictured below), the majority of the Upper Peninsula is at an unhealthy to moderate level of air quality. Lake Superior, along with the other great lakes, has cold temperatures that can keep the low-quality air from clearing out.

“The sky looks milky it’s just there’s a lot of smoke in the upper parts of the atmosphere. Those types of conditions probably will continue here for a few more weeks until the fires are extinguished and we get to where we get a nice cool clean air mass to kind of clean the whole atmosphere out,” commented National Weather Service Meteorologist Matt Zika.

The National Weather Service reports that the air quality should steadily improve through the holiday weekend.

“Heading into the weekend we should continue to see some slow and steady improvement with the air quality. We’re not going to get back to a perfect pristine air because the winds are going to remain relatively light, but there’s nothing that’s going to really cause that really hazardous low-level air to come back up into the UP,” continued Zika.
