MARQUETTE, Mich. (WZMQ) – Hosted by the Upper Peninsula Construction Council, the Building Trades Summer Camp is a paid, six-week program teaching 30 students about engineering, electrical work, plumbing, and other trades in the UP.
This year, the camp will have “Fieldtrip Fridays”, where students will travel to the job site, and view the work that’s getting done.
Students in grades 9 through 12 who live within a 45-minute driving radius of Marquette are eligible to apply.
UPCC hopes programs like this can help build a baseline of interest early on in their educational careers and give them a foot in the door to later opportunities. “So it’s just again exposing them to particular situations and sites where they would be working just to see ‘am I comfortable with this’ ‘is this something I wanna do as a career choice’…just kind of giving them that opportunity and that exposure like you said where o I see myself in the next ten or fifteen or twenty years,” commented UP Construction Council Executive Director Michael Smith.
Applicants will be interviewed on June 15 and the finalists will start on July 10. Before beginning, students will participate in a financial literacy workshop provided by Range Bank.
