Norway-Vulcan School to Host Student Art Show Next Week

Norway, Mich. (WZMQ) – Norway-Vulcan School in Dickinson County is getting ready to showcase the artistic talents of their high-school students at an upcoming art show. The event, which will take place in the evening on May 17th from 5-7 pm central time, will feature a variety of pieces and media from the students, and promises to be an eye-catching and colorful affair.

Sophomore Jayda Hunter, who is one of the students participating in the art show, has over ten works going into the exhibit. One of Hunter’s top favorite pieces is an eye-catching surreal-style piece titled “Powell Power”. “Powell is her last name, and then it’s just very bright, vibrant,” Hunter explained.

She commented on the favorite piece, contrasting it with other black-and-white pieces she had previously focused on in the beginning of the year. “Definitely the oil pastel. We weren’t required to do the oil pastel, we had to do something with color, and I picked the oil pastel. So this is a piece from the beginning of the year, so it was all in black and white. Almost everything that we did.” Hunter enjoyed the opportunity to create with the brightly-colored oil pastels.

Senior Skylar Davenport, who will also be showcasing her artwork at the event, noted that she has an array of pieces going in, including animal pieces like a watercolor Giraffe, object pieces, and a digitally created picture of herself that was part of an identity project. She also mentioned that her sea turtle painting is a present for her mom, who loves sea turtles.

“Mrs. Dahlman and I were talking about oil paint versus acrylic paint. And she’s more biased toward oil, and so is Jayda,” Davenport added.

The art show is sure to be a hit with students, faculty, and visitors alike, and will showcase the incredible creativity and talent of the students at Norway-Vulcan School.

“The art show is a display of all their work from the year! It’s a nice way to see what kids have accomplished,” marveled Katie Dahlman, the K-12 school art teacher. The students will be hosting the event, which is free and open to the public. It will be hosted along with the athletic banquet and will take place in the Media Center across from the middle school gym.

For those interested in contributing to the Norway-Vulcan school art program, the students are accepting anything that could be used in a creative art project, but often make use of items like Prisma brand colored pencils, Table easels, Oil pastels, Water-based oil paint, Soft pastel pencils, Micron pens, Soft pastels, and Kopic markers.
