ISHPEMING, Mich. (WZMQ) – The Michigan DNR about outdoor safety after a young boy went missing in woods in the western U-P over the weekend.
Police say 8-year-old Nante Niemi survived by covering himself with branches and leaves to stay warm and even ate clean snow for hydration.
The DNR commented that Niemi did the right thing by staying put and waiting for search and rescue teams. Those who are camping or hiking should always let family or friends know where they’ll be before heading out. The DNR added to bring extra clothing and food if possible. If you do end up lost in the woods, DNR comments to stop where you are and to try and remember any landmarks you may have passed by.
“Well living in an area where there’s surrounded by the great lakes the weather can change frequently so you can leave on a warm sunny day and end up in a severe thunderstorm in a matter of you know half an hour or an hour,” commented Deputy Public Information Officer John Pepin.
Pepin said to always remember to pack a compass or follow the closest body of water.
