MARQUETTE, Mich. (WZMQ) – Tonight the Marquette City Commission voted to begin negotiations for the sale of a parcel of land on South Lakeshore Boulevard.
The commission voted 4-3 to allow the city manager’s office to begin negotiations with a hotel developer for the sale of a 2.8 acre lot at 601 S. Lakeshore Boulevard. The potential buyer, Marquette Opportunity LLC, has submitted a proposal for development of a 93 room hotel on the land.
Marquette commissioners who voted yes to begin negotiations say the city has a fiscal responsibility to explore development options.
“We need to do more as a community to find alternate forms of revenue to help avoid tax increases, and this a prime example of what we can do to help avoid that,” remarked Commissioner Jermey Ottaway, who voted yes to begin negotiations.
According to Commissioner Ottaway the proposed project still has many steps to go through and years before completion.
