Iron Mountain, Mich (WZMQ) – The Iron Mountain girls’ softball team was at their home field against L’Anse for a double-header tonight. They were hoping to come back strong after a tough loss in their first game of the night. Ellison Powell, the team captain, knew that they had a lot of work to do, but she was confident in her team’s abilities.
“We have a very young team, I’m the only senior now. So it’s kind of a work in progress. I’ve had a lot of experience, I’ve played on a travel softball team for four years and there’s not – softball’s not huge around here. And so, coming from somewhere there is a little bit more experience, I think it’s good for them,” Powell said.
Despite their setbacks, the Iron Mountain girls’ softball team rallied in their second game of the night. They collected over ten runs and secured a well-deserved win.
“I’m pitching for high school this year because our pitcher tore her ACL during basketball season. I’ve pitched in like little league and stuff, and I don’t normally pitch. I caught the second game too, so sometimes I’ll do that. I’ll play first, third, shortstop,” Powell explained.
Powell was a versatile player, willing to step in wherever her team needed her most. The player has been scouted by recruiters from a college downstate. This fall, Powell will attend Albion College on a full four-year academic scholarship. She will play for their MIAA Conference and NCAA Division III girls’ softball team.
“Actually, one of my coaches from Escanaba, my travel coach, said something about Albion, how good it is. So I went down there and visited, talked to the coach. I really liked it there. It was the perfect size school. It’s close to bigger cities. I just really loved it. I loved the school itself, and I loved the programs that it had,” Powell noted.
The Iron Mountain girls’ softball team will step up to the plate in their next double-header on Monday against Houghton, with Powell ready to lead her team to victory once again. The team plays their rivals, Kingsford later this month before competing in their district championships in Gladstone coming up at the beginning of June.
