MARQUETTE, Mich. (WZMQ) – In spring, sudden snow storms can be heavy and damp as the temperature increases. The late snowfall and water runoffs have eroded some potholes that were already fixed. Marquette City Public Works commented that it’s already used over 50 tons of the asphalt mixture to fix the roads and has had to order even more, just four months into the year.
“You’re gonna get a lot of those that go through a little bit of freeze-thaw at night and still pop the material back out. If there’s a path for even more water to get in there especially if you’re on hills,” commented Director of Public Works, Scott Cambensy.
Public works said freeze-thaw cycles have prevented a substantial melting to take place, causing debris to build and disrupting the asphalt mix from fixing the holes properly.
“If you’re doing it like Tuesday and it stops snowing but you’re getting a lot of runoff and you’re getting all that melt you can try to fill the big ones you just know it’s not gonna last very long and it’s not super effective,” continued Cambensy.
