Water Safety tips from the Marquette Fire Department

MARQUETTE, Mich. (WZMQ) – The warm weather this week has brought many to the beaches of Marquette to enjoy the outdoors. But swimming this early in the year comes with some dangers.

The Marquette Fire Department would like to remind the public there are dangers when swimming in Lake Superior. Lifeguards do not begin working on the beaches until May 29th which means those who choose to swim before then are swimming at their own risk.

The fire department says it’s important to pay attention to tides which can cause rip currents.

“I would estimate the water is no more than 34 degrees, it’s a completely different game, hypothermia sets in very, very fast,” said firefighter Logan Triest.

Triest also mentioned the trash left behind by beach goers over the weekend. Officials found beer cans, trash, and all kinds of trash items on the beach after the warm weather earlier this week

“Once the partying is done, it leaves a mess and it becomes everyone’s problem,” Triest added.

Until the beach season officially starts on May 29th there are no warning flags on the beaches, until then beach goers can check current conditions by checking here.
