MARQUETTE, Mich. (WZMQ) – In April, the Upper Peninsula can see a mixture of weather patterns from the snow to heavy dense fog. WZMQ spoke with National Weather Service Meteorologist Matt Zika who comments that the snow that is still present in the springtime creates the perfect equation for foggy conditions.
“It’s possible next week we’ll see some days where we have a little bit of fog fortunately early in the week it looks like the air mass is going to be dry enough to where it’s not immediate as the sun comes out during the day and the air mixes it’s harder for the fog to exist throughout an entire day without the continual of warm moist air moving over,” said Zika.
The Upper Peninsula springtime experiences what’s known as “Advection Fog”. Moving warmer air over the cold snow brings the air temperature down to the dewpoint creating a dense fog.
“Advecting or moving warm moist air over a very cold surface down on the ground and it causes the air near the ground to reach that dewpoint temperature of where it’s saturated and the cloud to condense at the ground level,” continued Zika.
