Marquette to add electric vehicles to city fleet

MARQUETTE, Mich. (WZMQ) – The City of Marquette will soon be purchasing 3 electric vehicles using a grant.

The City Commission voted unanimously to approve a MiNextCities grant on Monday night. The grant will provide the city with around $200,000 in assets, at no cost to Marquette. The city was one of three chosen in the state to be the model for fleet electrification.

“Really what this is, is another step in us pursuing this energy transition and being proactive in it to make sure our residents are and our community is ready,” said Marquette City Mayor Cody Mayer.

Along with the purchase of electric vehicles for the city fleet, the commission also voted to install 3 electric vehicle charges in downtown Marquette. The EV charging stations will be funded by a separate grant.

The Commissioners also heard feedback from community members on the possible development or sale of a city-owned lot near Lake Superior at 601 N. Lakeshore Boulevard. It was decided at the previous city commission meeting that the City Manager’s office would begin to review 3 letters of intent the City has received about the property.

“We do encourage residents to let us complete that analysis, but also let us hear you out,” said Karen Kovacs, Marquette’s City Manager. “That can be done at the community office hours with the city manager, which is scheduled for week, or at the next city commission meeting.”

Kovacs will be hosting Community office hours Wednesday March 8th at 10 am in the Peter White Public Library.
