MARQUETTE, Mich. (WZMQ) – For the first time ever downtown Marquette transformed into the Festival of the Dog Sled.
Oberstar Incorporated used dump trucks to pile mountains of snow in downtown Marquette. A team of backhoes and bulldozers then flattened the snow creating a path for both sledding, and dog running.
The snow started making its way downtown around 2:30 in the afternoon and crews worked for several hours to prepare it for the festival. Washington Street was transformed into a track for the Michigan Tech dog sled team to provide rides on.
Third Street turned into a sledding hill for attendees to race down.
The entire festival was planned in just about 48 hours as the races were called off Wednesday morning. But you wouldn’t be able to tell that from the excitement attendees showed. NMU student Isaac Gurley said “You cant beat it.”
Crews will work to clean up the roads overnight so they can reopen on Saturday at 4:30 a.m.
