CAAM gets grant for energy-efficient home upgrades

MARQUETTE, Mich. (WZMQ) – The Michigan State Housing Development Authority (MSHDA) recently awarded Community Action Alger Marquette (CAAM) a grant totaling $250,000 to aid the community through energy-efficient home repairs and upgrades through the Michigan Housing Opportunities Promoting Energy Efficiency program (MI-HOPE). Residents can now apply for the MI-HOPE program online.

The MI-HOPE program, an extension of MSHDA’s Neighborhood Enhancement Program (NEP), aids communities throughout Michigan by providing funds to local governments and non-profit organizations to engage in energy-efficiency housing projects. Eligible assisted activities include roofs, insulation, modification or replacement of heating/cooling systems and more. The complete list of eligible activities can be viewed on page five of the MI-HOPE term sheet.

“We’re excited to support CAAM as it works to facilitate positive change within the Marquette and Alger county through energy-efficient repairs and maintenance,” said Tonya Joy, Neighborhood Housing Initiatives Division Director. “The purpose of MI-HOPE is to improve the health and safety of residents by providing much needed repairs and maintenance to roofs, windows, and more. MSHDA want’s to positively change communities around the state, and we believe CAAM will utilize the funds to make the biggest impact.”

CAAM will use these funds towards modification formodernization/efficiencypurposes orreplace of heating (furnaces or boilers)/cooling (full home only/ventilation systems and water heater upgrades including on-demand retrofitting and appliance upgrades to energy star rating, i.e. stove,refrigerator. The projects are anticipated to be completed by April 20, 2026.

“The MI HOPE Program will have a positive impact on homeowners in addressing energy efficient upgrades to their homes” said Michelle LaJoie, Executive Director of Community Action AlgerMarquette. We look forward to our continued partnership with MSHDA to provide homeowner programs to both Alger and Marquette County”.

MI-HOPE funding is available statewide, with up to $28.5 million being distributed through various funding rounds – including up to $10 million in the first funding round. The second round of funding will be announced in spring 2023.
