Northern Michigan University has voted in a new president and tonight, Dr. Brock Tessman was at the university to speak with faculty and the community about his ideas for the Wildcats. This week, Tessman is grasping what it’s really like to be a Wildcat. “I do think that it’s remarkable how much the city of Marquette and NMU are connected”, said Tessman.
Coming from an academic background, Tessman considers himself still much like a student. With a background in athletics, Tessman is excited about this weekend’s hockey game against the University of Alaska Anchorage and is in full support of athletics that pull the community together. “The role of athletics on campus is a really important one like I said students succeed when there are student-athletes alumni engage community member’s rally behind the institutions”
The board and president-elect have discussed addressing the enrollment at NMU declining and new programs for mental health services on campus. Current interim president Kerri Schuiling says he’s a great fit for not only the Wildcat community but Marquette as well. “He also really wants to…identify the culture so I’m very excited about that”
“I had an old mentor who used to talk about building a university that’s worthy of its surroundings. I think NMU is there already but heading out to Presque Isle yesterday and seeing those swells come in and the wind and just the grander of the setting makes you realize how much NMU is part of that natural setting”
