In a decision made back in July, the Michigan Supreme Court made a decision that expanded the Elliott- Larsen Civil and it’s coverage to include gender identity and sexual orientation.
This new expanded precedent creates protections for people within the LGBTQ community against discrimination in a workplace environment, when it comes to applying for housing, as well as within the community when using public services and accommodations.
Here in Marquette, since 2015 their has be a city anti-discrimination ordinance protecting those in the LGBT community from discrimination. the ordinance was passed unanimously back in December of 2015, updating their anti-discrimination ordinance so that is now states:
“It is the intent of the City of Marquette that no person be denied the equal protection of the laws; nor shall any person be denied the enjoyment of his or her civil rights or be discriminated against because of their actual or perceived race, color, religion, national origin, sex, age, height, weight, marital status, physical or mental disability, family status, sexual orientation, or gender identity.”
