Marquette City Commission Approves Brownfield Plan for Former UPHS Hospital Site

A A

Marquette City Commission voted unanimously to move forward on the brownfield plan at the former UPHS Hospital Tuesday night.

The $166 million project will not be funded by city tax dollars. Instead, the money will come from a private investment from the Veridia Group, according to Mayor Jenna Smith.

The plan includes $44 million for demolition and environmental activities, which includes site preparation and asbestos removal.

The proposal says the Northern Michigan University Foundation will work with the Veridea Group to assure the project serves the community in the best ways possible.

Several community members attended the meeting to voice their concerns about affordable housing.

Commissioner Jessica Hanley said the vote was only to approve the plan to demolish the buildings on the property.

Veridia was the only bidder on the project and has yet to release its full plan for the property.

The hospital project is expected to take up to five years.
