A $9.6 million project to rebuild part of U.S. 41 in Houghton will resume Monday, May 2, according to the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT).
This year’s work will focus on the portion from Isle Royale St. to Pearl St. It includes widening College Ave. to add a center left-turn lane, storm sewer improvements, and city sanitary sewer and water main replacements.
Work started in 2021 and was suspended for the winter. The project is expect to wrap up Sept. 16.
Drivers will see some traffic restrictions. Northbound U.S. 41 will remain on its normal route, while southbound U.S. 41 will be detoured for most of the 2022 construction season. The detour route will begin on southbound M-26 at the Portage Lake Lift Bridge to Sharon Ave. and ending at MacInnes Dr. Local traffic will be maintained along Montezuma Ave. to Shelden Ave. Temporary traffic signals will be installed at Military Rd. and Portage St. to replace the existing four-way stops.
