Today was Marquette's Downtown Day Out, formerly known as Ladies Night Out. However, this year, the Downtown Development Authority chose to expand the promotion to include the entire day, allowing more people to participate. Michael Bradford, the DDA's Promotions Director, says it's all about getting people downtown. "We want people to be aware of what downtown has to offer. It's not just retail, it's not just restaurants, but there's also experience and service. It's very diverse. It's a quite large downtown," said Bradford.

When Howard Schultz visited NMU last month, he shared his humble beginnings, his experiences at Northern and his life skills with a room full of students during an intimate Fireside Chat with NMU President Brock Tessman Wednesday, he shared even more. Through the Shultz Family Foundation, he has gifted NMU with One million dollars. President, Tessman recalls how that came to be. "He visited campus about a month or so ago, he was so inspired by that visit, that he followed up with a million-dollar gift to support student scholarships and our athletics programs," said Tessman. Tessman believes Schultz's visit made an impact on the students. The visit also brought back fond memories for Mr. Schultz, who graduated from Northern in 1975.

Former Starbucks chairman donates one million dollars to NMU

In their first meeting since the election, the Gwen Area Community School Board is again planning to ask the voters for the funds needed to maintain their schools, and even though the bond proposal lost by 400 votes, the school's superintendent, Dr Sarah Croney says she is not discouraged. "We looked at it as 38% of our voters a year ago were positive in their vote, and this year, 46% were positive," said Croney.

NMU hosted a conference focusing on social services needed in Native American communities. The conference seeks to strengthen indigenous communities by restoring Native American cultural practices as it relates to social services to native peoples. Conference organizer Shelby Boggs explains the idea behind the event "We want to really emphasize the ways that community and culture are both resiliency and protective factors for Native American people in response to the traumas and intergenerational traumas that we experience." said Boggs.

Polling locations in Marquette officially closed at 8 pm, but if you were in line by then, you could still vote. "The polls, even though they closed at eight, we allowed those folks that were in line to vote. So it did finally finish up at about 20 after eight or so," said Talsma.

On Wednesday evening, the public was invited to hear from the newly created Ontonagon Health Care Committee about their plans for a new hospital. The committee, in conjunction with Ontonagon Twp., plans to build the new facility within the now-closed Maple Manor Nursing Center in Ontonagon, which was purchased and then donated to the committee by local contractor Norm Pestka.
