DETROIT (WZMQ) — WZMQ 19 News was recognized as the winner of the Best Newscast award during the Michigan Association of Broadcasters annual Broadcast Excellence awards program.
The station was presented with the honor Saturday at a ceremony in Detroit.
The honor comes just months after the station – the Upper Peninsula’s CBS and MeTV affiliate – began broadcasting its local news live from historic downtown Marquette in October.
WZMQ competed in the market 4 group which includes Alpena, Escanaba and Marquette.
Reporter Mitchell Rife was also recognized with a merit award for his feature report on a B-25 bomber visiting the Upper Peninsula.
The Michigan Association of Broadcasters contest promotes and recognizes outstanding work in broadcast journalism.
Following the announcement, messages of congratulations poured in from viewers to executive producer and anchor Sarah Blakely, weather anchor Ariane Stassek, news director Trent Bailey, operations manager Kenn Baynard and the rest of the 19 News team.
