Three Norse each have ten kills

ESCANABA, MI – The Bay Norse Volleyball Team (10-8, 4-3 MCCAA) needed four sets to take down the Montcalm Community College Centurions on Wednesday evening.  By taking the match with scores of 25-22, 25-21, 22-25, and 25-18 the Norse moved up into third place in the MCCAA Northern Division.

The first set was a back-and-forth affair with the Norse scoring the final three points to secure the set.  Bay would use a 10-4 run in the second set to take control and had to hold off the Centurions.  Montcalm would rally in the third with the score tied at 20 to steal a set, but Bay responded in the fourth with a 7-0 run late that put their guests on the ropes.

Montcalm’s offense struggled to get rolling, putting up a negative attack percentage in the first and a .000 in the second.  They did start to get going in the third with 12 kills and five attack errors, but could not keep it going in the final set.

Bay was plagued by 16 ball handling errors and 12 service errors but had just enough offense to overcome those mistakes.

Addie Morton (SO, Ishpeming, MI) had a late charge to help the Norse seal the victory and ended with ten kills.  Mia Hauser (SO, Wallace, MI) and Ava Maki (FR, Marquette, MI) also connected on ten kills apiece.  Hope Varoni (FR, Bark River, MI) finished with 36 assists and helped on the defensive end with 23 digs.  Jade Jasenovsky (SO, Menominee, MI) was the defensive leader once again, piling up 29 digs.  Hilarie Porcaro (SO, Sault Ste. Marie, MI) added 15 digs, while Hauser ended her night with 14 digs.

Jordan Dumpreh (SO, Flint, MI) led Montcalm with nine kills.  Ella Bishop (FR, Grand Rapids, MI) picked up 24 assists, while Erin Borek (FR, Grand Rapids, MI) led the Centurion defensive effort with 25 digs.

At the same time North Central Michigan College lost 3-2 at Alpena Community College which is their third consecutive loss.  That vaults Bay into third place in the division as they head into the final stretch of games.  North Central Michigan will host Delta College on Saturday, while Bay will be off that day.

Bay’s next match will be at North Central Michigan on Monday evening at 6:30.  The Timberwolves won the first matchup on September 17 in Escanaba three sets to one.
