Four Wildcats in top12
GREEN BAY, Wis. – It was quite the start to the season for the Northern Michigan cross country team, as they finished in second place at the Phoenix Open hosted by the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay on Saturday afternoon. The Wildcats totaled 54 team points, being edged by the the 47 from St. Thomas in first place. The Green and Gold were well-represented in the top-10 with two finishers. Senior Madi Szymanski led the way with a time of 22:14.8 for 5th place. Not far behind in her first collegiate race was freshman Ashley Choponis, taking 7th with an impressive debut time of 22:31.8. NMU went back-to-back for 11th and 12th, with Lamar Gordon crossing first at 22:39.5, followed by Sophia Potter in 12th, crossing the finish line at 22:45.0. Northern had another group of three not far behind the lead pack. Emma Sweeney finished in 19th at 23:00.4, Dani Vanlente was 21st with a time of 23:00.4, and Beverly Harper took 23rd, ending her race at 23:05.4. Freshman Maija Maki-Warne (23:31.4, 39th) and Ella DeBruyn (23:33.2, 42nd) also registered top-40 finishes. Also clocking in under 24 minutes and just outside the top-50 were Lola Korpi (23:43.9, 55th) and Madalyn Agren (23:49.5, 56th). UW-Milwaukee’s Anelise Egge won the race with a time of 21:39.7.
