Lakosky breaks NMU single-game scoring record in win over Lewis

Seven goals and six assists for 13 points

MARQUETTE, Mich. – The Northern Michigan women’s lacrosse team took a 20-9 win in the Superior Dome against the Lewis Flyers, giving NMU their fifth win of the season.

A close-scoring game in the first two quarters resulted in a nine-point goal differential score for the Wildcats after a dominant six-goal scoring streak in the third quarter. Josie Lakosky broke her own program record for most points in a game, as she ended the match with seven goals and six assists resulting in 13 points.

Six other ‘Cats found the back of the net against the Flyers with Maddi Bast, Sophie Langsdale, and Taylor Priestley adding three goals each. Abby Sisson, Laine Stanton, Avery Lorinser, and Camryn Mayer scored one goal each as well.

The Wildcats finished the game outshooting Lewis 28-23 and causing the Flyers to have 18 turnovers, eight of those being caused by Northern. Presiding over Lewis, the ‘Cats held the Flyers at a 16-10 groundball advantage.

How It Happened
The Flyers started the game by winning possession of the draw, but a saved shot from Zoe Montgomery kept the game scoreless. Winning back possession, the dip of a shoulder from Lakosky caused a Lewis defender to go down and she was able to find the back of the net first.

An assist from Natalie Thomas allowed Lakoskey to add another to the scoreboard, and Bast found a goal of her own. But Lewis answered back just a few minutes later every time, ending the first quarter in a 3-3 tie.

To kick-off the second quarter, Bast received a foul that didn’t lead to a goal, but kept the ‘Cats in possession. With a few passes, Lakosky found Taylor Priestley inside the eight meter who hit Lewis with a behind the back shot to make it 4-4.

The Flyers added one to the scoreboard just a minute later on a foul from Bast. With a draw game, Lakosky put on the wheels and went goal for goal with Lewis for three minutes straight. Bast found the net once again, and a little Lakosky and Sophie Langsdale action ended the second quarter with the ‘Cats at a 10-7 lead.

Coming right out of the locker room, Bast ripped one into the back of the net 30 seconds into the third quarter, scoring her third goal of the game. Keeping up with the momentum, Northern went on a six-goal scoring streak. With 7:44 left in the third quarter, Lakosky broke the program’s most points in a game record with 11, which she set earlier this year at 10 points. Ending the third quarter at a score of 17-8, NMU was on a roll.

Furthering her new profound record, Lakosky found Avery Lorinser inside the eight meter late in the fourth quarter to make it 18-8. Finding her seventh goal of the game, Lakosky added another goal to the scoreboard, and Laine Stanton scored the last goal for Northern ending in a 20-9 victory for the Wildcats.
