Burns, Solberg win titles for the Huskies

HOUGHTON, Mich. – The Michigan Tech Nordic ski teams won the Butch Reimer Cup as CCSA Champions on Sunday, taking home the men’s, women’s, and overall team titles at the Tech Trails. Bridget Burns and Tryg Solberg were individual conference champions.

“It was an historic race weekend for our program,” Tech coach Tom Monahan Smith said. “It’s the first time in my coaching tenure where the women’s team and the men’s team both won the Butch Reimer Cup, taking away the overall team title, and the way they did it was pretty darn special today. The men had their best classic race of the season which was awesome and to see the women finish in the top four was special.

“I want to thank everyone who supported us this weekend with the 78 volunteers, parents, families, and the cross country team. We had amazing skiing conditions, and the support we received made a great event possible.”

In Sunday’s women’s classic, the Huskies swept the podium and took the top four spots for the first time in program history. Bridget Burns was the CCHA individual champion in classic, followed closely by Greta Hansen, Marie Sølverud Wangen, and Alice McKnight.

Wes Campbell had a third-place podium results in the men’s 7.5K classic on Sunday with Colin Freed (5th), and Tryg Solberg (6th), and Parker Courte-Rathwell (8th) also in the top 10.

On Saturday, Tryg Solberg was the CCSA individual champion in the 20K mass start skate, edging teammate Colin Freed by seven-tenths of a second. Wes Campbell crossed in fifth and Sam Stertz was eighth.

Bridget Burns started her weekend with a second-place podium finish in the 20K mass start skate on Saturday. Greta Hansen had her first of two runner-up finishes with Alice McKnight in fourth and Marie Sølverud Wangen in sixth.

The Huskies get back to action next weekend (Feb. 22-23) with the NCAA Central Regional Championships at Al Quaal in Ishpeming.
