Bemidji State wins Winter Carnival trophy 11-8

HOUGHTON, Mich. – Michigan Tech fell 6-5 in overtime to Bemidji State on Winter Carnival Saturday night. Elias Jansson scored a hat trick, including the tying goal with 20.8 seconds left in regulation, but the Beavers took the extra CCHA point with 1:33 left in the extra session.

The Beavers won the MacInnes Trophy, outscoring the Huskies 11-8 in the weekend series. Elias Jansson was named Winter Carnival MVP.

“It was an entertaining game for the fans,” Tech coach Joe Shawhan said. “Congratulations to Bemidji for coming in here and competing hard.

“I thought our guys got energized in the second half of the game and our power play was good tonight. The Raiman, Nordstrom, and Kukkonen line played hard and matched their energy and compete.”

Elias Jansson scored the first of his three power play goals 8:06 into the game to jump start a five-goal period for the two teams. He chipped a puck from below the goal line that bounced off the goalie and across the line. Isaac Gordon and Max Koskipirtti assisted.

Bemidji State then scored twice to take the lead. Alexi Sylvestre scored at 10:57 on a loose puck in the slot.

Kasper Magnussen gave the Beavers their first lead with his second of the weekend at 11:19 of the first on the power play. He blasted in a one-timer from Kirklan Irey.

Max Koskipirtti scored on the power play at 12:58 to tie the game at 2-2 in the first when he shot a sharp-angled one-timer from Rylan Brown.

Noah Quinn scored with 2:07 left in the first on the power play to give the visitors the lead at intermission, finishing off a backdoor pass from Reilly Funk.

Alex Nordstrom scored the lone goal in the second period, sniping a shot over Mattias Sholl on a breakaway after a long stretch pass by Chase Pietila. Matthew Campbell also assisted on Nordstrom’s second of the season and his first goal at the MacInnes Student Ice Arena.

In the third period, the Beavers challenged for a major penalty and got a 5:00 power play. Kasper Magnussen scored his second of the night to go up 4-3 at 9:39.

Elias Jansson tied it up with his second of the night at 13:42, tapping in a backdoor feed from Rylan Brown. Max Koskipirtti added the second assist.

The Beavers again took the lead with 3:31 left in regulation with Jaksen Panzer found the back of the net.

The Huskies added the extra attacker with 2:29 left and then had a 6-on-4 advantage after a penalty was called on the Beavers. Rylan Brown again found Elias Jansson in front of the net and he tipped the puck over the goalie to tie the game with 20.6 seconds left. Jansson’s 10th of the season was also assisted by Chase Pietila.

Jackson Jutting scored the overtime game-winner at 3:27.

BSU led in shots 34-26. Ryan Manzella stopped 11 shots in the first period. Derek Mullahy finished the game and made 17 saves. Mattias Sholl had 21 saves for the visitors.

The Huskies were 4-for-4 on the power play and 1-for-4 on the penalty kill.

Tech makes its first ever trip to Augustana next weekend (Feb. 15-16) for their only meeting of the season.
