Four players score in double figures

HOUGHTON, Mich. – The Michigan Tech women’s basketball team saw four players reach double-figure scoring as the Huskies played a complete game to dismantle Saginaw Valley State 84-46 at the SDC Gymnasium on Thursday evening.

First-year guard Kendall Standfest (7-for-14) and sophomore Alyssa Wypych (7-for-7) each recorded 16 points to lead the Black & Gold as forward Maja Kowlozska (15 points) and Emma Anderson (10 points) also reached double-figure scoring. Michigan Tech shot a seasons-best 60.3 percent from the field while scoring a dominant 46 points in the paint.

With the win, the Huskies elevate to 6-9 overall and 3-4 in league play. The Cardinals drop to 8-7 overall and 2-5 in the loop.

“I think our mindset was different, from start to finish we played with heart and it was great to see that we stayed aggressive against their pressure and got good looks and paint touches—Saginaw makes you play fast and we did a great job against that,” said Tech women’s basketball coach Sam Clayton. “It was great to see all of our players be able to go against the pressure and keep composure–It’s always nice when you have a bunch of different players you can go to with four in double-figures.”

Standfest went to work early and had a team-leading 10 points in less than eight minutes of action, pushing the Huskies ahead of the Cardinals 15-11 before closing out the quarter, leading 17-13 and never looking back.

The Huskies’ defensive efforts were on full display as they allowed the opposition just 18 points between the second and third quarters, with a quarter-low eight points occurring in the second quarter to send the Black & Gold into the halftime break with a 41-21 advantage.

Offensively, Michigan Tech shot 78.6 percent in the second quarter, with seven points coming from Wypych as Kozlowska (six points) and Anderson (five points) helped add to the lead while the veteran guard recorded three assists in the period.

Michigan Tech poured in 43 points in the second half while holding Saginaw Valley State to 25 points, with the final quarter of action showcasing 25 points for the home team with graduate transfer Kaitlyn Maxwell coming off the bench to score a career-high eight points in down the stretch to go with seven points from Kozlowska.

“It was really important for our team to get this win and to win by almost 40 goes to show how well our practices were this week,” Standfest added. “All the confidence of my teammates and coaches told me to be aggressive and look for my shot, which opens up things for everyone else.”

Megan McCalla led the Cardinals with nine points as Ava Locklear posted a team-leading seven rebounds.
