Huskies outshoots Lakers 39-18
HOUGHTON, Mich. – The Michigan Tech hockey team fell 4-2 to Lake Superior State Friday at the John MacInnes Student Ice Arena. The Huskies jumped out to a 2-0 lead before the Lakers scored the final four goals, including an empty-netter.
“Congratulations to Lake State. I think they have a team that can score some goals when they have a good look at the net,” Tech coach Joe Shawhan said. “We played well enough to win but missed some scoring opportunities and made some bad defensive plays which led to their goals. I think we need more overall commitment to the game.”
After a scoreless first period, Chase Pietila gave the Huskies the lead 2:28 into the second with his fourth goal of the season. Ryder Matter won the faceoff to Trevor Kukkonen and Chase got the puck, walked in, and fired in a wrist shot for his seventh career goal. The play extended Pietila’s point streak to seven games.
The Huskies then took a two-goal lead after Matthew Campbell blasted in a one-timer on the power play from Stiven Sardarian 3:44 later. Trevor Kukkonen also assisted on Campbell’s fifth of the season and ninth of his career. Sardarian has a point in four straight games.
LSSU (9-11-1, 7-6-0 CCHA) quickly tied it up in the second period. Bryan Huggins made it a one-goal game 40 seconds after Tech’s second goal, and then Reagan Milburn tied up 37 seconds later.
In the third period, Sasha Teleguine scored the game-winner using speed to the outside and firing a shot over the blocker 3:22 after intermission.
Teleguine added an empty-net goal for his second of the night and 11th of the season.
Tech (11-8-2, 7-4-2 CCHA) dominated in shots 39-18. Elias Jansson and Trevor Kukkonen both had shots hit the post and the Lakers blocked 16 shots in front of their goaltender. Rorke Applebee had 37 saves for LSSU and Derek Mullahy stopped 14 shots.
The Huskies were 2-for-2 on the penalty kill and 1-for-3 on the power play.
The two teams will wrap up their only meeting of the regular season at 6:07 p.m. on Saturday. Marketplace Foods of Houghton has purchased and given away 500 youth tickets for Saturday’s Kids Day. The grocery store has been doing the ticket giveaway for over 20 years.
