WINONA, Minn. – Freshman guard Ty Fernholz recorded a career-high 23 points as junior guard Marcus Tomashek added 22, although the Michigan Tech men’s basketball team couldn’t overcome a great shooting night by Winona State, falling 90-78 at the McCown Gymnasium on a Saturday afternoon in Winona, Minnesota.

“Credit to Winona State,” Tech men’s basketball coach Josh Buettner said. “They played well and we couldn’t get a stop. To beat good teams on the road you need to be able to come up with stops and until we commit to that we will have our struggles.”

Michigan Tech (2-1) kept pace with Winona State (3-1) as both teams shot over 50 percent from the field in the opening frame, with the Huskies connecting on 14-for-24 shots (58.3 percent) while the Warriors poured in 17 of their 28 first half shots (60.7 percent). Both teams hit six triples in the opening period.

The Huskies jumped out to a 5-0 start and carried the lead for the first three minutes before the two teams began trading leads, seeing Michigan Tech pull ahead by four points following a free-throw made by Tomashek. Although, the Warriors ended the half ahead by as much as 11 with 36 seconds to play in the first half. Fernholz cashed in on a 3-pointer just before the break to see the Huskies trailing 46-38 heading into halftime.

Tomashek connected from downtown at the 18:54 mark to cut the lead to seven points (48-41) before the Warriors would sustain a double-digit lead for the majority of the game, with Fernholz bringing the Huskies back to a seven-point deficit after hitting his sixth 3-pointer on the day with just under 11 minutes to play.

A layup by Tomashek made it an 8-point game (69-61) with 8:42 to play. However, the Warriors’ hot shooting doomed the Huskies of a potential comeback.

Winona State also controlled the glass with 31 rebounds compared to the Huskies’ 18.

Following the 20-point scorers, Adam Hobson (12 points) and Dawson Nordgaard (10 points) reached double-figure scoring. Josh Terrian led the Black & Gold with six rebounds, while Tomashek had a notable career-high seven assists.

The Warriors saw Luke Haertle score a career-high 34 points while Isaiah Thompson collected a team-high nine rebounds.

The Huskies continue the road non-conference slate Sunday against NSIC affiliate Concordia-St Paul, slated for a 4 p.m. tipoff.
