Weisbrod paces attack with 27 points

MARQUETTE, Mich. – After scoring 26 points on Friday, Jacy Weisbrod poured in 27 points on 11-20 (55.0%) shooting to help lead the Northern Michigan women’s basketball team to a 80-51 victory over Bemidji State on Saturday afternoon in Vandament Arena. The Wildcats are now 4-0 on the season.

With an 18-18 first quarter and a slight 23-21 edge in the third quarter, the Wildcats used a 21-10 margin in the second and a dominant 18-2 final frame to get past the Beavers. Weisbrod led the way with 27 points while freshman Addison Pytleski added 13 on 4-5 shooting and Sarah Newcomer chipped in 13 more.

The Wildcats shot 30-67 (44.8%) from the floor while BSU was 16-53 (30.2%). NMU controlled the glass 47-30 and led in offensive rebounds 13-4. Nine Wildcats pulled down at least two boards, led by six from Mackenzie Holzwart. Northern dished out 17 assists to just five turnovers for an impressive 3.4 assist to turnover ratio.

An evenly played first quarter saw each team put together a sizable run to gain the lead. First, the Beavers scored eight straight to lead 15-11, but the ‘Cats erased that deficit with seven straight on a triple from CJ Romero and a four-point play from Weisbrod. BSU knocked down its fourth three of the opening quarter in the final seconds to knot the game at 18’s.

Tied at 25-25 early in the second, NMU went on a 10-0 run to grab a double-digit lead with 2:45 before halftime. The Wildcats held BSU scoreless for that four-minute stretch, and would not trail again the rest of the afternoon. Northern led 39-28 at the break, shooting 9-18 (50.0%) in the second to BSU’s 3-15 (20.0%).

The third quarter was a lot of back-and-forth, with neither team scoring more than four points unanswered. NMU edged the Beavers 23-21 in the quarter thanks to a 6-0 advantage on the offensive glass.

The fourth quarter was as dominant as you’ll see. The Green and Gold scored the first 15 points, with Weisbrod knocking in three from beyond the arc, before Bemidji finally got its first scratch at the 1:25 mark, its lone points in the final frame. Prior to that, the Beavers shot 0-8 with five turnovers. NMU dominated the final quarter 18-2 to pull away with the victory.

The Beavers committed 14 turnovers to NMU’s five, and the Wildcats took advantage of each and every one of those, managing a 23-0 dominance in second chance points. NMU also dictated play in the paint, outscoring BSU down low 34-14.

Jacy’s weekend with 27 and 26 mark giver her the second and third best individual performances so far in the conference this season. She leads the GLIAC early on with 13 made threes.

Up Next
The 4-0 Wildcats will head to the Land of 10,000 Lakes to take on Minnesota Duluth on Saturday, November 23, and St. Cloud State on Sunday, November 24. Both games will start at 1 p.m. ET.
