WASHINGTON, D.C. (WZMQ 19 News) — U.S. senators brought National Hot Dog Day to Capitol Hill Wednesday afternoon with a special Michigan-themed event.
Senators Gary Peters, D-Mich., and Elissa Slotkin, D-Mich., were joined by various Michigan economic development organizations, small businesses, and of course, hot dog lovers. The annual “Taste of Michigan” event on Capitol Hill showcased some of the state’s most iconic hot dogs, beverages and sweet treats.
July is National Hot Dog Month and National Hot Dog Day typically falls on the third Wednesday of the month. The U.S. Hot Dog and Sausage Council says the midsummer date highlights one of America’s most popular comfort foods.
According to the Hot Dog and Sausage Council, during peak hot dog season — from Memorial Day to Labor Day — Americans typically consume 7 billion hot dogs. That’s about 818 hot dogs consumed every second during that period.
