WASHINGTON, D.C. – The President’s Great American State Fair, an event that honors the 250th anniversary on the national mall features state booths, food and even a rodeo. The event is getting mixed reviews from visitors.
“I’m amazed at how big this is,” said Frank Weiss, who is visiting the fair.
At the fair pople can use a passport like souvenir and get it stamped at booths dedicated to each state and territory. While some states like New York went all out for their booth, others like the Virgin Islands, America Samoa and the Northern Mariana Islands weren’t as elaborate.
“It’s nice,” said Edward Salseda, who is visiting the fair. “I’ve been to other folklife festivals that are a little bit more elaborate but it’s an interesting deal that every state has something they feature as being a high point for them.”
As the temperatures are expected to rise to triple digits later this week, we saw visitors trying to stay cool by finding shelter under a tree, in a tent, eating ice cream ior cracking open a cold one.
For many, the highlight of the fair is the Ferris wheel. There are other entertainment areas, like this rodeo arena and exhibits that highlight companies and art. Parents could sign their kids up for “Trump Accounts”. We also saw this juggling act. Some of the main stages didn’t see large crowds but had guests speaking. Monday’s speakers focused on the Make America Healthy Again movement. There was also a tent dedicated to Christianity.
For some visitors, they sported their red, white and blue. We saw many people wearing patriotic clothing.
We asked people what they thought of the fair overall:
“I think its definitely a work in progress,” said Brooke Johnson, who is visiting the fair. “I’m sure by Friday they’ll have a lot more things.”
“I think it’s neat to see all the people from around the country get together and meet each other,” said Sam Jeffreis, who is visiting the fair.
The fair is part of Freedom 250, which stems from the President’s executive order that created the Task Force 250. It’s different from America 250, which was created by Congress ten years ago to celebrate this big anniversary.
