DELTA & MENOMINEE COUNTIES, Mich. (WZMQ) – When the U.P. was hit by a harsh blizzard in March, many schools were forced to go over their snow day limits. In an effort to avoid extending the school year, some districts have asked the State to provide additional inclement weather days.
In Menominee County, Bark River-Harris Schools took an extra three days off due to hazardous road conditions. This week, the district was informed that those three days have been forgiven. According to a post on the district’s Facebook page, that means if no other inclement weather days are required, the last day of classes will remain as scheduled.
In Delta County, Escanaba Area Public Schools faced a similar situation. As WZMQ 19 previously reported, the district was given six inclement weather days for the year. In mid-February, the district reached its fifth. By the time March blizzard conditions improved, it had taken ten.
According to the superintendent, the Department of Education has forgiven three of those extra days. He says if the State legislature takes no further action, Escanaba’s school year will have to be extended by one day.
